Specs New York has closed at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Signage has been removed from above the storefront. The sunglasses retailer first opened at the mall in 2014. It temporarily closed at least a couple of times in the first four years of its tenancy at the mall, so another return can't entirely be ruled out. Specs appears to be the latest victim of the moribund Montgomery County economy, as this is the only of the chain's locations nationwide to be closing.

"Specs appears to be the latest victim of the moribund Montgomery County economy”. You can stop beating the horse, it’s dead. Malls are dying. Funny how you don’t say anything about moribund when a store or restaurant opens at MM.
Not a good sign, eye glasses and eye glass fittings and grindings are likely on the list of products least likely to be affected by online competition. Too bad.
Re: stores moving into MM, pop ups and kiosks don't count!
Specs New York's website says "Specs New York is a family owned and operated group of designer eyewear boutiques with locations in New York, Maryland, and Virginia." They used to have stores in Old Town and Springfield Town Center in Virginia. Yet the only store showing as open is the one in National Harbor. Sounds like this chain is the one that is "moribund".
7:20: Malls aren't dying - just the ones that owners want to tear down, because relaxed zoning allows them to build things they couldn't build when they first developed those malls.
I did an extensive Google search, and found no recent articles about any other Specs stores closing. What may have happened many years ago in other states, I have no idea. Right now, politician-created moribundity is putting the hurt on Montgomery County, and this particular Specs store. National Harbor is less moribund than Montgomery County, though!
