Construction of "The Green," the town square at the new Westbard Square development in Bethesda, is proceeding at a steady pace. The "Westbard Square" logo sign that faces Westbard Avenue is now lit after dark, as are the stringed bulbs above The Green. Accent lighting on the curved benches has also been activated, and the swinging benches now have overhead illumination.

Speakers have been installed around The Green |
Speakers have been installed at strategic spots around The Green, to amplify the sound of live entertainment from the stage, if not for some form of Muzak at other times. There is a search-and-find animal game targeted towards kids, or the young-at-heart. Start your hunt on the beige pavers of the pathways around The Green.
Not all animals are part of the game, however. The space is now accessible to the public - but, not so fast, Fido: Dogs are not allowed on the green's turf surface, according to new posted signage. Let's take another virtual tour of a space where you may be spending some quality time this summer:

What a relief, I thought all those string lights were for a used car sales lot…
Give it sometime and it will degrade to a used car lot.
This is comically disappointing. Developers and County Council should be ashamed of themselves.
Wow, aren't you pleasant.
Are we sure this isn’t really a Putt-Putt golf course?
So this was the "Green Space" that they talked about at the planning meetings with the community and old tenants were going on. As a former store owner in the Old Westbard, enjoying life here in Centerville, Ohio away from Regency and Montgomery county. Enjoy your "Green Space". Thanks Robert for all the post, enjoy reading them and saying Thank God we don't live there anymore.
Good luck convincing them.
Astro-turf? Not very European and posh but appropriate given the lack of community support for this development.
We were told that the retail employees of Giant, Starbucks and Tatte would be able to buy homes in the square. LOL.
Soon to be renamed: Poopville.
814 - What store did you own?
"appropriate given the lack of community support..." Are you really implying that a developer delivers a better product when a community supports them blindly? That is ridiculous. The problem here is the developers were NOT held accountable to work with the neighborhood. Every step of the way, the developers pushed for more density. High rises would NOT have resulted in more or better green space. Astro-turf is being used because they anticipate too many people in too small a space. That's ok, according to the county, Westbard is an transit oriented community that needs affordable housing but is not deserving of actual grass.
Neither Regency nor MoCo made legitimate effort to actually listen to the neighbors. Cabin John Village is an example of a developer who listened to the residents over the County and didn't bow to the absolute pursuit of profits. But now that it's here, Regency, PLEASE make the area safer for children by changing the stop light to allow traffic to pass freely on Westbard Avenue and discourage cars from traveling on Zenith Overlook. Has anyone noticed the light existing on Zenith is always green?
So here's a question: where will the dogs go? All those townhomes will certainly end up adding some dogs to the neighborhood. I asked EYA (before Regency took over) if they would provide a dog park for all of the residents they would be adding. The answer was an emphatic no. Kenwood Place residents will fight hard to keep them off their property. They have no intention of being a dog park. Should be interesting.
