RESIDENTS STILL HAVING SAFETY ISSUES AFTER WOODMONT AVE. REOPENING IN BETHESDA (PHOTOS)

Drivers may not see you
emerging from behind these
obstructions
A reader sent photos of the situation south of the new Capital Crescent Garage on Woodmont Avenue, and is hoping changes can be made to improve safety there. She said she was nearly struck while crossing the street by a vehicle that was traveling on Woodmont toward Wisconsin Avenue, where driver views were blocked that day by portable toilets.
Fence blocking sidewalk;
wheelchair would be unable to pass
Other issues include faded crosswalk paint, a cabinet designated "flammable" that joins the toilets by the crosswalk, construction fences blocking the crosswalk on Woodmont at times, a need for more signage to alert drivers to the crosswalk, a potential need to add a stop sign there, and - a more minor offense, but taken as an offense by neighbors - leaving the portable toilet doors hanging open.

She said Bethesda-Chevy Chase Services Center Director Ken Hartman has told her he will investigate her concerns. But I want to mention this so other pedestrians will be aware in the meantime, if it hasn't been fixed already - keep in mind that drivers may not see you when you are crossing there.

I drove past here yesterday and noticed the same thing. It's a blind spot for drivers. The crosswalk is not clearly marked, and the portable toilets make it nearly impossible to see pedestrians. They should address this soon before someone gets hurt.

I can only imagine the odors from those portable toilets with their doors open.

Any way to move the toilets away from the neighborhood homes or make them less visible?

Disaster waiting to happen- I drove thru the other night and couldn't believe they reopened the road under these conditions! As a pedestrian (and actually even as a driver) I would prefer to continue to detour up to Wisconsin.

Completely unacceptable! The crosswalk is blocked by the swinging fence every single morning and it is only a matter of time before a pedestrian will be injured

9:26 If you prefer the detour, then take the detour.

Any idea what's in the flammable container near the toilets?

Remember, this is right behind folk's backyards.

@10:25 AM - Obviously, I will do so in the future...I believe that was inferred in my comment :-)

I've heard reports of pedestrians in that area being attacked by vicious gangs of "keep right" signs.

They should have just kept all of this closed until it was actually ready.
