Bethesda Smashburger space available for lease

The space currently occupied by Smashburger at 4903 Cordell Avenue is being marketed for lease by JBG Rosenfeld Retail Properties. An online listing says the space can be available as soon as this month. The monthly rate is "negotiable."

Dang. Another Bethesda restaurant bites the dust.

Who owns this building?

Smashburger wasn't a good fit for our community. The name evokes images of violence which are at odds with a progressive community.

Really 5:29 am? The burger chain failed because of the word "smash"? Using that logic I'm surprised Tommy Joes has been able to survive this long since the name evokes memories of the gangster-ridden 20s and that wretched Tommy Gun.
My guess is that it failed because of that awful exhaust pipe by the urban heights entrance which stank of sewage every time you walk by.

The restaurant is still open, but the space is listed for lease.

Music to Tommy Joe's ears. If they're smart, they'll grab that space. Upstairs bar/restaurants in general don't do well. The name Tommy Joe's has nothing to do with gangsters or a machine gun. Silly. That's the name of a person affiliated with the original ownership group.

@5:48 that sewage exhaust pipe is another lovely Woodmont feature that we can thank Dyer's beloved Karr Architecture. Oh and the transformer in front of Dunkin.

They should have just left the old antique shop there and waited for the original master plan for Norfolk to play out but they got greedy and now that is forever a dead spot.

We'll still have BGR and Bold Bite.

That would be smart for TJ to have ground floor space! Rent can't be cheap though.

Actually "Bethesda's Stinkiest Exhaust Vent" improved substantially in the middle of 2015, and is no longer a nose-sore (if there is such a word).

Wahlburgers is looking for a space in the DC metro area. And, agreed, the smell is substantially improved.

Probably just a heavy-handed negotiation tactic on the part of the landlord, to get a rent increase from SmashBurger.

Wow, thank god.

"Really 5:29 am?"

Their joke went right over your head, huh?

G. Money said...

It's odd because that joke has been made about a thousand times in the last month.

To be fair to 5:29, it wasn't that funny to begin with.

That's actually a very good point.

It was not an antique shop but rather a furniture repair shop. The owners retired in about 2005 and it remained vacant after that.

So the top level has two businesses last less than a year each. The bottom level is crapping out around two years.

Woodmont Triangle is fubared.

7:35PM All of Bethesda is, not just the cheap seats.

Ugh. My family and friends love this place. Apparently not enough of us... It's hard to imagine what is capable of succeeding here.

Hi Dyer. I'm a loyal reader of your site. Can I ask if you follow up on your posts and questions with the actual developers, council members, etc.? It seems you ask a lot of good questions all the time but don't really do anything to find out more. We would love to hear more about rationales and reasons given to see if there is actual justification or further detail on any of the issues. Thanks!

8:44am: majority of restaurants never admit they're closing.
Even Chef Geoff used the classic "electrical or plumbing problem" excuse.

8:44: I have no idea what you're talking about. Sounds like just another lame shot from a competitor or the MoCo political cartel. This site is presenting the "further detail" that is missing in what passes for the local media.

Ok well I was a loyal reader. What would make you think I'm a competitor or part of some government conspiracy theory cartel?

Just generally things like asking for comment or details , getting both sides of the story, etc before blasting your opinion and take.

You're not fooling anyone 1:03PM.

7:33, Is that your honest belief? That I work for a competitor tasked to comment here? Or that I am part of a government conspiracy? Really?
