Westbard Square construction update (Photos)

Here's a look at the latest progress on the Westbard Square development at 5400 Westbard Avenue in Bethesda. You can see more architectural details taking shape on some parts of the Giant building now. Where the walls were being constructed on the side facing the current Giant store, you can now see arched openings being formed on the second floor of the 3-story building. I have included a couple of Regency Centers' renderings below, showing what those arched windows will look like on the finished product, which is scheduled for delivery in late 2023.

I have to say I’m a bit disappointed by the design shown in the proposed renderings, especially on the townhouses in the back. But the new Westbard will certainly be better that the existing, and obviously much more dense.

Why are they using cinder blocks instead of poured concrete for the walls? Isn't that the cheap way to do it?

The old Westbard was crap. The new one will be much, much better.

4:19pm not sure it was "crap". The Giant is the best in Bethesda. The rest of the center covered the basics of life well: Starbucks, barber, cleaners, hair salon, kids private school uniforms, county liquor store, drugstore, toy store, pet store.
Westwood 2 had a well reviewed restaurant and Dominos

Not bad for "crap"!

When I say "crap" I mean aesthetically, architecturally. Dated, old design of a shopping center with strange configuration of loading docks facing the main street. I was not referring to the actual businesses which are basically useful as you said. Too much so as I spend way too much at that county store. Giant is good too even though they implement the "Bethesda surcharge" that is, stuff costs more there.
