Mailbox theft in Bethesda

Postal pirates are still on the prowl in Bethesda. A reader found this mailbox at Beech Avenue and Montgomery Drive open and cleaned out yesterday morning, March 8, 2023, and no mail inside. This is on the Bethesda Trolley Trail, and near the YMCA and Bethesda Country Day School.

If you placed a check in this mailbox recently, or any others nearby that might be opened with the same key, you may want to monitor your bank transactions in the coming weeks. Thieves who rob, steal or buy the arrow keys that open mailboxes have a way to chemically remove writing from checks, allowing them to alter the Pay to the Order of name and dollar amount. The United States Postal Service has advised that you place checks into mailboxes as close as possible to the pickup time printed on the box.

Looks like a system we should run our elections through

I'm not quite sure why these boxes even exist anymore. Normal mail? Put it in your mailbox for the carrier to pick up. Important mail? Bring it to the post office.

What's a 'check'??

I was victim of a mailbox theft 18 months ago and ended up getting robbed like many others in our area. (Don't get me started on the incompetence of banks and financial institutions and their inability to stop fraud and forgeries...)

Two businesses I've worked with for years still require paper checks (despite my concerted efforts to change that). Since the theft of my mail, I have pretty much stopped using the postal system all together and only use delivery options and services that include tracking. It's not perfect, but it is much better than standard mail, especially when it really matters.

This issue isn't covered very often in the local news, but Robert has been on top of it over time (thanks!). I first learned about the mailbox thefts through this blog, unfortunately too late for me :-( Robert has also reported on mail carriers across the region who have been robbed at knife- and gunpoint. Horrible and unacceptable!

This has been going on for a while:

Politicians come and go along with their promises to rectify the problem. Me thinks it is a concerted effort to make people use the more expensive delivery services with tracking. It is a subtle Make America Rich Again campaign.

Food for thought? From a 2020 USPS survey of youth mail engagement and communication behavior in Gen Zers between the ages of 13 and 18 and their parents:

"The OIG surveyed Gen Zers and found that, despite their Internet connectivity and access to technology, they are familiar with the Postal Service and a majority agreed the Postal Service is relevant to them. Gen Zers also reported being engaged with mail; the majority both send and receive greeting cards, letters, and packages. As well, nearly half said they share the responsibility of checking and sorting mail with their parents.

While in-person communication is prized and digital channels are preferred for their immediacy, the OIG also learned that Gen Zers do recognize mail as a way to convey emotional connection. In fact, most said that receiving cards, letters, and packages makes them feel happy — and this was a larger percentage [than] those who were happy receiving video calls, emails, or texts. Mail continues to resonate with this generation, and the OIG’s research provides strategies for fostering Gen Z’s positive engagement with mail.

What is that in the picture. Do we still have those. I saw somebody suspicious just the other day hanging around the phone booth. And for those of you thinkng that this supports your opinion that mail in voting is bad, come on.

It's about showing ID not about not mailing it in. Let's avoid Woke disingenuousness.
