The Dog Coop, a doggie daycare business, will open in the former Paul's Wine & Spirits space at 5205 Wisconsin Avenue NW in Friendship Heights. Founded by Judi Clayton, The Dog Coop will offer daycare, dog walking, training, grooming, and overnight boarding. There will also be a retail area inside with an emphasis on healthy and organic products, and promoting offerings from local vendors as much as possible. The Dog Coop will also contribute to local animal-related charitable causes, and maintain two boarding suites at all times for dog owners in emergency situations, such as a sudden illness or a victim fleeing domestic violence.
Paul's closed in early 2022, citing "issues" with the Voight Office Building ownership as the cause of its demise, according to Fox 5. In operation in Washington, D.C. for over 65 years, Paul's was at this location for the last 38. Its window is still in place over the front door.

Paul's was one of the great liquor stores from a sort of bygone era. I remember the owner and his son well. They knew everything about that business, everything. They had that NYC direct personality and were definitely characters in the best way. They knew their customer and what each liked and wanted to buy. Chevy Chase Liquor on the Ave was like that too. But Paul's was my place and one of a kind. A doggie place? How unfortunate.
Yeah we’re losing one of a million liquor stores for a doggie place that is going to maintain boarding suites for victims of domestic abuse and sudden illness. Says a lot about you as a person if you think that’s unfortunate.
We can't have nice things for Man's Best Friend. JAC needs his booze to make it through another day.
Pronounced coop like chicken coop, or coop like co-operative?
8:49 - Another keyboard cowboy. So, lamenting the closing of a great, local business, serving the local community for years, equals animal hater. Sad isn't it? Yes, it is.
12:24 - So, no one can lament the closing of a great liquor store? Were you ever a customer there? Then you'd know. Again, wishing they hadn't closed somehow equals pet animus? Let the adults talk please. Thank you!
8:00- It's just a liquor store dude. I hope you'll be able to emotionally recover from its closing. Maybe you can hold a memorial service for it.
7:03; No, it was not "just a liquor store". It was a place were the owners knew there customers.
