CITY LIGHTS OF CHINA REPAIRING FIRE DAMAGE

City Lights of China is working towards reopening after a devastating kitchen fire that caused over $400,000 in damage to the restaurant about 3 weeks ago. The Bethesda Avenue Chinese restaurant has requested a construction permit from Montgomery County's Department of Permitting Services for $19,000 worth of interior fire damage repair and restoration.

A reopening date has not yet been set.

Insurance scam

Not crying foul by any means - but curious how it's $400,000 in damages but only $19,000 in repairs?

Also for those who might know - does insurance cover loss of business in events like this?

Well, $19K in permitted repairs, e.g. redoing electrical and rehanging sheetrock. I'd imagine the bulk of the monetary damage is to the commercial-grade appliances and everything else found in a kitchen, which obviously don't require permits to replace.

Makes sense, thanks. Where did that 19k come from though? With home renovations I don't think you have to list the value do you? Is commercial different?

Yeah, listing a value of the work done as a dollar amount when filing for a permit is done for residential permits as well. I don't think it's a big deal if you're off, e.g. you commonly see round numbers. It's just a standard box to fill out that doesn't mean very much, probably - just something that helps make clear the scale of work being done.

YAY. It is my favorite Chinese place and I wasn't relishing having to find another.
