Another business flees doomed asbestos building in Bethesda (Photos)

A second business tenant of the soon-to-be-demolished office building at 4962 Fairmont Avenue has found a new home nearby. Like College Nannies and Tutors, Shipshape IT will stay within the Woodmont Triangle.

The new Shipshape HQ is taking over the vacant space upstairs at the EagleBank building, located at the intersection of Fairmont and Woodmont Avenues.

Meanwhile, ahead of demolition, asbestos removal will begin today at the 4962 Fairmont office building. That work is expected to take 10 days. Ultimately, the building will be demolished to make way for Duball, LLC's 4990 Fairmont luxury condo tower.
As Ace Ventura once said,
"Do not. Go in there."

"Doomed asbestos building"

It's not being torn down because they found asbestos in it. Nearly all buildings built before asbestos was banned have at least some asbestos, and this must be abated when doing major renovations or in this case, demolition.

Birdbrain.

Yes, thankfully someone other than Greenhill owns that property.

5:53: No kidding, "birdbrain". I've been reporting on this demolition for weeks, and have always said - including in the above article - that it is being demolished to clear the site for the 4990 Fairmont condos. What a moron.

So why the sensational and misleading headline "flees doomed asbestos building"? Wouldn't "leaves building scheduled for demolition" have been much more accurate?

Quibble if you want, but the headline is factual and accurate.

The building has asbestos and is doomed for demolition. The businesses have moved out.

Anonymous said...

Neither. The headline implies that the presence of asbestos is the reason that it is being demolished.

You can read into it what you like. Still accurate.

No it's not.

Check the notice pictured above - ASBESTOS PROJECT. And the building is indeed doomed. Demolition permits were already filed for. Very accurate to anyone proficient in the English language.

I like the old buildings. Asbestos schmasbestos.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm going to miss the stone buildings. All the new sparkly-shiny stuff seems so cold, sterile and glossy.

The headline is misleading and sensationalizes the tenants moving out. They are moving out because the building is slated for demolition, totally independent of the asbestos sign. The sign is required because as part of the scheduled demolition, asbestos was found and proper abatement procedures must be followed. It has absolutely nothing to do with why the tenants are moving out. It would be helpful to your readers if you fuller understood what you write about rather than trying to sensationalize these events.

I second that.

Yes thank goodness! We are getting some true density and development instead of Greenhill one story crap he sits on. To what end? Greenhill please someone find out or speak up. Are you going to assemble and build up our community or just trudge along as is and not care?

It's factually correct but misleading.

This and the stone bank that came down were nice architectural pieces. But I understand why they had to go.

"Build up our community." What community?
"density and development" Cold, sterile and glossy - not conducive of community

I don't see the new Bethesda as a destination. More of a starting point.

Where do you want people to live?

Who do you want to support the stores?

Where do these people come from?

Just because you got in at a point you like doesn't mean it stays that way forever.
