Work is advancing on the conversion of the old Giant space at the Collection at Chevy Chase in Friendship Heights. The new grocery store tenant is being kept a secret, but UrbanTurf reported last January that it could be an Amazon grocery store. There is currently only one confirmed Amazon grocery store opening in Montgomery County, an Amazon Fresh grocery store that will be in the 270 Center on Shady Grove Road in Gaithersburg.

Construction continues at mystery grocery store in Chevy Chase (Photos)

I'm really, really hoping it's not an Amazon, since the closest grocery is Whole Foods. That basically gives Amazon a lock on the grocery in the neighborhood. Keeping my fingers crossed for a Aldi, Lidl, or Harris Teeter (I mean, Safeway and Trader Joe's are right up the street, Giant was the one driven out, and Wegman's is going in down by Fannie Mae, making this a poor site for a Wegman's. That doesn't leave many options. Balducci's is closing stores. Who is left? Aldi et al is expanding, as is Amazon. Those seem like the two best options, unless we think a non-local chain, like Kroeger, Piggly Wiggly, or Albertsons is a possibility?)
Also, for the record, I suspect the only store that would require this level of secrecy is an Amazon grocery; mainly because the other grocery store within walking distance for all of is also owned by Amazon (Whole Foods.)
