After more than a decade of controversy and contentious planning, construction is getting started on the Westbard Square development at the Westwood Shopping Center in Bethesda. As expected, the entrance to the Regency Center-owned property across from Bowlero was shut down yesterday, There is a turnaround space left for delivery trucks and errant drivers. The other entrance by Anglo-Dutch Pools and Toys remains open.
Phase 1 of the project will involve demolition of the former Capital One bank and Rite Aid drugstore, and construction of a 3-story retail building anchored by the new Giant grocery store on the vast parking lot area beyond the former Rite Aid. Future elements will include a mixed-use residential and retail building on the site of the current strip mall structure, townhomes between that site and the Kenwood Place condos, townhomes on the nursing home site on Ridgefield Road, and an assisted-living facility on the sites of Westwood Center II and Citgo.
The contractor is the family-owned L.F. Jennings. That firm has worked on several grocery store projects in the area for Whole Foods and Harris Teeter, parts of Pike & Rose and The Boro in Tysons, The Shops at Dakota Crossing, and multiple Target stores, to name just a few highlights of its large portfolio. Delivery of the new Giant building is anticipated for 2023.
