Matuba reopens in Bethesda (Photos)

Venerable Bethesda Japanese restaurant and sushi bar Matuba has reopened under its original owner at 4918 Cordell Avenue. The restaurant is split between the traditional dining area, and a new self-service counter, which had a chef behind it on Sunday preparing menu items.

Owner Kunio Yasutake said the restaurant had been run by different owners for the last 6 months, but that he is now back on the premises. Printed carry-out menus were available, and the sushi displays are back in the window to lure in passersby.

Can you explain the new self serve section? Is it prepackaged sushi ready to go? I'd definitely try that for lunch if it is.

So if it has reopened, how come you don't have any pictures taken from inside? None of the pictures you posted show any changes to the restaurant. As @ 7:28 AM notes, it would have been useful if you had explained the new self-serve section.

You come in, order your food and you go.
Lol..have you anonymous guys ordered stuff to go before?

It's probably the same anonymous folks that need a big sign saying a sidewalk is closed and other such things someone couldn't figure out easily for themselves. :)

@ 8:33 PM - You didn't think about that very hard, did you? Readers are curious how this is implemented specifically at Matuba, and what changes had been made to the previous layout of the restaurant to accommodate this.

8:37am I don't know about a "big" sign, but it's helpful to know if a sidewalk is closed so folks can cross elsewhere.

8:42am Dyer said in his report that it's split between the counter self serve/ to go area and the sit down dining.

Stop by, the Matuba folks are friendly. Support small business.

I've been supporting Matuba for a quarter-century, thank you very much.

You didn't see the huge sign at woodmont and battery? Width of the sidewalk! Glad they switched it out.
