Construction of new 2nd District Police Station set to begin in Bethesda

Developer StonebridgeCarras has requested the initial construction permits from Montgomery County to start work on the new 2nd District Montgomery County Police station in downtown Bethesda. Located at 4823 Rugby Avenue, the new station has been designed by the architecture firm of Michael Baker International.

The station will replace the aging one at the corner of Wisconsin and Montgomery Avenues, where StonebridgeCarras will have a prime transit-oriented property to redevelop right near the Bethesda Metro station.

Such a small lot. I thought all that could go in was a one story TD bank.

So they choose this lot for the station, while 2 TD banks are being built on large former gas station lots? And to top it off, the new police station will require half of the existing parking spaces in the adjacent public garage to be dedicated to station use. Residents in this part of Bethesda already have limited parking (that garage is full day and night, with the exception of some spots on the roof which in winter months is impossible to park on anyway). And the planner's/developer's/county's response to this legitimate resident concern is simply that residents can simply use the lesser used garage on Rugby?? Instead, why don't they dedicate spaces for the police station in that unused desolate garage instead? Why will the residents be required to walk several blocks just to get home because of (once again) poor planning in Bethesda?

This rendering may not be the best, but this makes it look like this building could quickly become the ugliest in Bethesda. That is quite a championship.

9:09, Jeez I was happy to hear they were replacing the eyesore that district 2 uses now then I saw this cinder block monstrosity. I think the new homeless shelter in Silver Spring is much more attractive from the renderings I saw.

And why stick it in a residential area near several hotels - the constant sirens is going to get annoying.

Been discussed before. Yes, it's got to be the ugliest building in town. It doesn't take much to make it blend in with all the other new buildings going up. Oh well, at least they'll have a new home. Tough to be a cop these days.

There won't be constant sirens. Most officers are out patrolling when they get calls for service, not sitting in the parking lot waiting for a call.

Silver Springs Metro called. They want their Cell Block H back.

Not even bikes on the roof can help this. Or minature golf. They need Quidditch.
