Henry's Sweet Retreat website goes online

Henry's Sweet Retreat, a candy store opening this summer at 4823 St. Elmo Avenue, has a new sign and new website up. Graeter's premium ice cream, "funky" sodas, coffee, popcorn, and a wide selection of house-made fudge and sweets will be available.

The shop will also host parties and sell unique children's gifts. They're currently seeking a pastry chef.

Serious question: how many sweets/candy/chocolate places have opened or will open in Bethesda? There's the high-end candy place on Bethesda Ave I think (near where Dunkin was), then the Chocolates one you wrote about yesterday. Are we up to .. 4 of them now?

My main concern about all these sweets purveyors opening up is that Equinox memberships will increase. I really don't want to see what is a lovely gym become crowded.

Exactly. What's up with the glut of candy shops? They'll all close except the one reported yesterday. Because, as I commented, she owns the building. All the others you can imagine how much candy you have to sell to pay those rents each month. Dylan's from New York is so well done and successful but none of these appears to offer close to what Dylan's does.

Don't forget about sugarfina, birdbrain

It took me a while to recognize this place - the long-vacant Greenhill site that was "Annie's Bistro Francais" for a short time.

Let's see how long this new place lasts under Benny G.'s reign of terror.

@6:30 Please stop calling Robert a birdbrain. It is neither nice nor progressive. We all use his blog to communicate, and we owe him a level of respect in the comments section.

I suggest that commenters refer to Dyer as an "emubrain" rather than a birdbrain. There are many highly intelligent species of birds - such as parrots, crows and mynahs. In addition to being intelligent, they are also very sensitive and they are greatly insulted by the comparison and feel that they did nothing to warrant it.

Don't forget about Max Brenner as well. Best bar in Bethesda if you're trying to get chocolate wasted!

Hey Poppy I highly doubt 630 cares if he isnt being nice or progressive. He is one of the communists that EQR has hired to troll on here. Talk about high school drop out!

Robert - really surprised you missed sugarfina and Max Brenner. I guess you only stock your van with candy from the stores you listed...

You are joking about the "comments" and "EQR has hired to troll" bits I imagine

@9:02, it's one of Dyer's favorite recycled jokes/insults. Apparently it's from some A&W Root Beer commercial that he's obsessed with from the 1980's

"Hey Poppy I highly doubt 630 cares if he isnt being nice or progressive. He is one of the communists that EQR has hired to troll on here. Talk about high school drop out!"

Dyer's friend keeps spouting nonsense. EQR is Equity Residential, an entity totally unrelated to Equity One.

"I dont get the Mr. Dum*** joke?"

It's how Mr. Dyer refers to everyone who doesn't agree with his incongruous positions.

Anonymous said...

@928- LOL - prob last time he got any action!

Anonymous said...

"EQR has hired a communist who doesn't care if he isn't progressive..."

Well that's about as coherent as anything else that Team Birdbrain ever says.

Is this the next fad, like cupcakes and frozen yogurt were? Both those have pretty much gone under, except for Georgetown Cupcakes and that froyo place next to the nail salon the next street over.

This is going to complicate my list of next Bethesda restaurants to go under. I was right on Soup Up. My next bets are Gusto Italian Grill and Villain & Saint.. but all these candy places really shake it up a bit. I'll have to stop by each one to see which has the worst layout and management, to earn a place on the coveted list.

10:27 AM The candy places are quite different. Sugarfina is a small boutique. The place at Montgomery Mall is huge and has all sorts of sugary goods, including imported sodas.

Robert Dyer already has reporting on Max Brenner trying to sublease their space on Bethesda Row.

I certainly would not count Sugarfina out yet. They are not so much a 'pop in and have a sweet' sort of business as they are an event-planner's dream come true. They sell small batch artisan treats using gourmet ingredients packaged neatly into small translucent cubes. You can then take those cubes and use them to assemble wonderful candy bento boxes. In fact, their latest ready to go bentos were designed by Jonathan Adler!

I used them to tackle the sweet element of my daughter's movie screening party last week and each girl found a custom bento box of sugarfina selections waiting for them at their seat. They were a big hit.

Sugarfina advertises themselves as a luxury candy boutique, and they live up to that description. Shopping there is a joy.

"Robert Dyer already has reporting on Max Brenner trying to sublease their space on Bethesda Row."

And he's been reporting that SmashBurger will close... for 16 months now.

I'm starting to think that Poppy's rich-and-out-of-touch caricature/persona is actually real. I mean how else could she possibly know this stuff?

11:44 AM SmashBurger's space is up for lease. Dyer has reporting on that. Draw your own conclusions I guess.

Sugarfina can't close before The Lauren opens.
The Lauren residents alone will keep it afloat.

"She" can read. One of "her" recent posted info was straight from the product's website.

Anonymous said...

Did anyone ever figure out if Dyer liked the Lauren?

Anonymous said...

"Dyer has reporting on that."

Weird syntax, Team Birdbrain.

@ 12:32 PM - He loves its location right across the street from the dispensary.

@1234 LOL- there arent enough drugs in the world to make that looney tune seem normal!

Poppy is clearly an entertainment device. I find her entertaining.

There are two types of people who hate Poppy. Either you believe she is fake and hate her because she is making fun of Bethesda snobs like you.

Or you believe she is real and you hate her because she is a snob to not-as-rich Bethesda residents like you.

The rest of us just have a good lol. Robert wins either way as it drives traffic here.

Someone is claiming the person behind "Poppy" lives in the backroom of an auto repair shop.
Any truth to that?

Looks like a good summer job. They will probably be out of business by September.

Free Häagen-Dazs on Bethesda Row from 4-7 PM today. Wanted to let everyone know cause Dyer won't hear of it until June.

Love,
Team Birdbrain

I just checked one of Greenhill's other properties, the one that says "De Tapas - Coming Spring 2016".

Well, today is May 10, and the last day of spring is June 19, in 40 days. The walls are just empty frames of lumber. It's not opening in "spring". It's probably not opening in the summer, either.

Another of Benny's Potemkin Villages.

Isabella was months behind schedule for Kapnos on Bethesda Row. Did you attack Isabella?

1:05PM Give it up. We know you're just a silly little fanboy.

"The rest of us just have a good lol."

Count me in the "rest of us"

Anonymous said...

"The rest of us just have a good lol."

I'm voting AGAINST. It's stupid and snobby.

The irony is that persons who cannot appreciate satire are usually the ones being mocked (i.e. "snobs" in this instance).
