Marriott HQ construction materials may reduce access to nearby Bethesda businesses

Demolition at the future site of the Marriott International headquarters and hotel at 7750 Wisconsin Avenue is now complete, according to developers The Bernstein Companies and Boston Properties. Underground utility work along the curb lane of Woodmont Avenue at the site is expected to continue for several more weeks. They do not plan to bag the parking meters on Norfolk Avenue this week, but if necessary, they will do that during work hours only. Deliveries of construction materials to the site could temporarily reduce access to adjacent businesses, but Bernstein and BP say they will alert those businesses beforehand, and try to coordinate with them.

Marriott is going to give these businesses thousands of new customers, on a block that probably employed 200 people at it's peak if we're being very generous.

I suppose you think they should use Amazon drones to deliver all construction materials to the Marriott site to avoid having a flat bed truck partially in front of the Tastee Diner? You have got to break a few eggs to make an omelet. See how I used a Diner reference there to make it easy got you.

The sky is not falling, neighbors will survive and flourish with 3500 more hungry Marriotters to feed at lunch, plus all the visitors and hotel guests. I contend that now is the perfect time for the Woodmont Grill to add elevators and stairs and create a great rooftop dining area to serve all of the new business. Tastee should renovate the inside and exterior and clean up their act to create an iconic Diner experience.

Do these now while the whole area is under construction.

Meanwhile, the first photo shows the last remaining pay phone in the country. Why hasn't that been ripped out of there?

Love that shot- pay phone and phonebook

Actually there is another pay phone on St. Elmo Avenue, immediately east of Old Georgetown Road.

No one covers the moribundity of a Fortune 500 headquarters being built like Robert Dyer!

I love what Dyer is doing for Moco with these reports!

Looking forward to this!

8:00: The Marriott HQ is merely relocating from North Bethesda downtown - just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Montgomery County hasn't attracted a single major corporate HQ in two decades. Meanwhile, Virginia has only added to its roster over that same period of time, with Northrop, Volkswagen, Intelsat, Hilton Hotels, Nestle, Gerber, Bechtel, etc., etc.

12:35 They're moving it to a high foot traffic area filled with businesses. How many restaurants could employees walk to in the North Bethesda office? How many will they be able to walk to in the downtown?

Marriott could have gone elsewhere. Just sayin

They're not currently in "North Bethesda." They're in "Bethesda" now.

1:12pm plenty of restaurants at Westfield Montgomery, steps from Marriott or short drive in a smart car.

"Plenty of restaurants at Westfield Montgomery, steps from Marriott"

LOL. It's more 3,000 from the western entrance of the current Marriott headquarters to the nearest entrance to the food court at Montgomery Mall. All of the restaurants of the Woodmont Triangle are within 1,500 feet of the new Marriott headquarters. 3,000 feet gets you all the way to Uncle Julio's in Bethesda Row.

"A short drive in a smart [LOL] car."

Yes, but then you have to look for parking, which will be in short supply after the Sears lot closes six months from now.

1:23: I realize you're a carpetbagger, but FYI the current Marriott HQ is located north of North Bethesda Middle School. Think about it. Marriott stayed only because we had to overpay them out of desperation. It didn't hurt that the conservative Marriotts have become more liberal politically than their parents, either. Kathleen Matthews is probably more responsible for Marriott staying than Hogan or Leggett.

2:46: Marriott HQ has a cafeteria now. No need for employees who find a 90 second drive to Wildwood or the mall to be too taxing for their low-energy constitutions.

So now you're insulting Marriott employees?

In which Dyer's readers remind him that Gerber is a subsidiary of Nestle.

Unless it's Christmas, there is no issue parking at the mall during lunch.

Or, you know, it could have something to do with the fact that turnover is costly, and the folks running Marriott realized they could minimize turnover by staying nearby — and attract new employees with an improved location.

Nah, you’re right, it’s definitely because libruls.

Robert Dyer said...

5:22: No, you're the one who insulted them by claiming they were incapable of driving 90 seconds in either direction for lunch.

5:37: And Virginia got both the Gerber and the Nestle hqs. MoCo didn't.

7:14: It is certainly partly "because libruls" (might want to employ spell check) - Marriott and Choice Hotels are the only major companies to agree to stay here, and both have left-of-center political beliefs, as well as a record of campaign contributions to Democratic candidates.

“might want to employ spell check”

whooooosh

3PM DYER:
The point about the amount of restaurants within walking distance of the new location was meant to say the new location will be helping more small businesses than the current one. Even the ones like Tastee, though inconvenienced during construction, will be rewarded by more people in the area upon completion.

I don't care about the amount of lunch options Marriott employees have you bird brain.

Saith Dyer: "No, you're the one who insulted them by claiming they were incapable of driving 90 seconds in either direction for lunch."

No, I was responding to the idiot who claimed that "Westfield Montgomery [is] steps from Marriott".

Anna said...

Carpetbagger? Now that you've got EVERYONE laughing at that lame attack on my character, keep researching, you'll get the correct answer. (Hint: currently in Bethesda. aka Westlake, MD)

I grew up with the Marriott folks. It's no big leap to infer that younger generations are more liberal than their parents' generation. Society is more liberal in general.

The new tax law will end business benefits of the HQ cafeteria. The current 50% limit to this fringe benefit for onsite eating is extended until the end of 2025. After that date, employer costs related to onsite food and beverage will no longer be deductible.

I find it hillarious that Dyer complains that the county isn't attracting new large employers but then complains about construction disruption and over-development. Every other day he finds something else to attack Marriott's headquarters or the Carr development by Bethesda Row.

If new companies come to Montgomery County where exactly does Dyer think they're supposed to put their employees?

You know the location of the second pay phone in Bethesda that no one has ever used in over 10 years. Why is it there?
