Here's a look at the progress on the new Westbard Square development at 5400 Westbard Avenue in Bethesda. The major additions have been on and above the ground floor storefronts facing Westbard Avenue out front, and the installation of window glass on the parking garage stairwell at the back. Both have greatly improved the appearance of those sections of the building. All businesses at the Westwood Shopping Center remain open during the construction.

The grab-bag of façade styles is heaving into view. . . heaving being the operative word. Designed by a committee of high school trade program students, no doubt. Nothing says quality building project like a jumbled mish-mash of exteriors tossed together like a child's box of toys dumped unceremoniously on the living room floor.
"This stuff was remaindered at Home Depot, so we got a deal. We figured we'd bang it all together and see what we could squeeze out."
Although I’m not a fan of the architectural design of this project, on many of these new urbanism mixed-use projects, the big idea is to make it look like it was built over time, by many designers.
Some of the brick details are quite handsome through.
I’m really looking forward to hopping on the Purple Line in Bethesda to visit Westbard!
I like it far more than I expected to; the combination of styles and colors breaks up what would be a large, 60's-style urban fortress into a welcoming group of buildings with many windows. I believe it will age well; I am a neighbor and think it looks nice.
This development along with follow up projects in Little Falls will complement the Purple Line extension to VA
It's much better than the thing it replaces. What was the crappiest part of Bethesda soon will be among the nicest.
5:24- The lowest priced house for sale in the "crappiest part of Bethesda" is $1 million. As of Thursday afternoon, the e second least priced house jumps to over $2 million.
Must not be that "crappy" !
But you can still buy a renovated 3-bedroom, 2-bath condo in Kenwood Place Condominium on Westbard for only $375,000.
