Bethesda construction update: Hampden House apartment tower (Photos)

Construction at the future Hampden House apartment tower at 7316 Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Bethesda continues to rise toward street level. Now on-site is a testing wall, where the fit of doors and windows can be double-checked on arrival. When completed, Hampden House will contain 366 rental apartments, and 10,110 square feet of retail and restaurant space. Developer B.F. Saul anticipates a 2025 delivery date for the project.

That is not a testing wall. It is known as a mock up, where the contractor builds a small sample section of the building for approval by the architects and owners. The mock up demonstrates that the construction flashing and insulation are being correctly installed. This is also the last chance to change material colors and details if they don’t look right. The mock up is designed to demonstrate as many conditions and material adjacencies as possible, usually where building tend to leak. I this case, multiple precast panels, brick, granite base, window lintels, window frames, windows glazing, dryer vents, flashing, caulking, precast attachment points, insulation, waterproofing and membranes are mocked up.
