Construction to begin at Chip City Cookies in Bethesda

The interior fit-out of Chip City Cookies at 4939 Elm Street in downtown Bethesda is finally about to get started. Demolition of the old Fancy Cakes by Leslie interior is nearly finished, and Chip City now has a construction permit from Montgomery County on display in the storefront window. The company had been hoping for a summer opening, which is still in reach, as summer doesn't end until September 23.

New York City-based Chip City enters an increasingly-crowded field of chain cookie shops, where it will face familiar Gotham rival Levain Bakery only a block away, and the so-far Bethesda-averse Crumbl Cookies that can compete via delivery. Even Waldorf is ahead of Bethesda on Crumbl's Maryland growth chart! See my original story on Chip City Cookies for a comparison of the cookie chains.

How novel --a trendy, NY-based business with a Bethesda outpost. You sure don't see many of those around here.

The cookies at the existing shops are pretty incredible I'll say that much. But, can you imagine how many they have to sell in order to afford that rent each month? It's really hard to believe concepts like that will be in business long only focusing one an occasional treat.
Even a food truck operation selling scratch made cookies would be hard. Cupcakes on the hand have done well and made those local girls super rich with Geo'twn Cupcake. But cookies? Not sure.

@See all above. I guess Levain is a pigmint of my imagination, so successful, out of NY, and cookies+.

I don't understand cupcakes; I don't understand cookies: donuts I understand.
