A demolition crew began the process of razing the retail structures between 6936 and 7000 Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Bethesda yesterday. Two lanes of southbound MD 355 were closed to accommodate the work. When the site is cleared, a 122' residential building will be constructed to be addressed as 7000 Wisconsin Avenue.

Nice to see this getting started! The building will also include a large component of retail along Wisconsin, as well as a covered pedestrian connection between Wisconsin and the alley. The retail also lines part of the covered pedestrian path, so a great opportunity for covered outdoor dining that’s not located along the busy street.
It’s nice to see this end of downtown get some attention. Folks living at the Adagio will be less isolated from downtown. I hope they fill in more of this section as proposed.
We need Orvis to reopen somewhere close. Great store.
They might be doing utility work in preparation to the actual demolition. Those look like utility vaults being installed under the sidewalk.
Hopefully this helps lower the rents some around here.... but I have a feeling it won't. There just isn't enough supply yet for these buildings to bother competing against one another to bring prices down.
We won't see an appreciable drop in rents until much more of Downtown Bethesda is built up with these developments and/or White Flint is completely redeveloped with new residential high rises.
The Corrupt MoCo Cartel has no real interest or competency to keep affordable housing readily available for residents or prospective residents.
The White Flint Mall site will be pushing up weeds for the next 5 years at least and you won't see rents drop appreciably in Downtown Bethesda until then, unless developers rapidly accelerate their building plans for Downtown Bethesda.
