First Brood X cicada emerges in Bethesda (Photos)

It's still quiet so far, but the first Brood X cicada emerged from the ground in Bethesda yesterday. From a coin-sized hole in the soil, it burrowed out in its exoskeleton. 

Once above ground, it will climb plants and trees to molt and discard the exoskeleton, and take on its red-eyed, winged form already so familiar to TV news viewers in 2021. You will find these holes multiplying in soil near trees the nymph form cicadas originally burrowed beneath in 2004, where they have been taking nourishment from the tree roots over the last 17 years.
