Montgomery County is proposing to acquire and convert a North Bethesda office building into a homeless shelter. 11600 Nebel Street is envisioned as a 200-bed emergency shelter for the homeless. The Montgomery County Planning Board will review the proposal at its May 27, 2021 meeting, but as a government mandatory referral application, the board can only advise on - not block - the proposal. In its application, the County notes that it has received no feedback on the proposed shelter from nearby neighborhood associations to date.

Good location choice. It's accessible to public transit but - being sandwiched between a car dealership and a Pepco substation - it's a subprime/relatively cheap piece of land to aquire.
An appropriate location in a mostly industrial area, and close to the MoCo Pre-release Center, making it easy to monitor two related facilities.

@6:07PM Let's hope they add one next door to your house and drive you out of MoCo for good. Funny how the Pre-release center has been operating at this location for decades, yet hundreds of new condos are rising as we speak. Don't seem to be any effect on the property values, hmm. Now in May 2021, they are buying an abandoned bldg and building a new shelter?
Is this because of covid? Im glad they do not want to turn residents back on the streets when the emergency state is over.
But how many millions will that cost? Wouldnt it be better to make those millions of dollars into vouchers so residents are able to rent apartments or live in supportive group housing?
The 2 taft court and 6 taft court locations also have the CCI Health Clinic and Cornerstone Mental Health Services. Will all those businesses also move to Nebel street?
Will the Dorothy Day Shelter (5320 marinelli) still be open or will it merge with this proposed Nebel street shelter?
