Vuk to close in Bethesda

Vuk
, a combination pinball arcade and pizza parlor at 4924 St. Elmo Avenue in Bethesda, will close after the end of business hours on May 16, 2021. Owner Scott Nash said its five-year lease is up this month. A new high-rise development, the St. Elmo Apartments, will rise on the site of Vuk and several other adjoining properties (Chef Tony's and the offices of the Lenkin Companies) in the next few years. It has been in the works for many years, and has gone through many changes and delays.

Nash, founder and CEO of MOM's Organic Markets, operated Vuk as a passion project rather than a purely profit-seeking venture. He said the pizzeria's eclectic decor - including a Battlestar Galactica Cylon, autographed Slayer memorabilia, and a Lord of the Rings sword - will go into storage for now. Game machines will be split between the MOM's stores in College Park and Abingdon, Pennsylvania.

Tough to make it on pinball and slices. No tears for him though. The owner is the founder of MOM market. Still, hard to make a nickel especially with the crazy restrictions this county has placed on food service establishments.

Downtown Bethesda could use a MOM's Organic Market.... Perhaps in the former Safeway space on Old Georgetown Road?

That property is just sitting there empty it seems.

Robert: Have you heard anything about new prospective tenants or interest in the former Safeway space on Old Georgetown Road?

"Game machines will be split between the MOM's stores in College Park and Abingdon, Pennsylvania." Just to expand on that last sentence. Yes, the Mom's Organic Market in College Park has a pinball room - a HUGE pinball room. Even people who shop there are often completely unaware of this. There are about 30 machines in the room, manufactured from the 1970s to today, and all are professionally maintained. It's definitely worth the drive!

The place is closing because the lease is up and the site's being redeveloped, not because Scott went bankrupt or something.
