Siemens Digital Brake Light van spotted in Bethesda

A Siemens Digital Brake Light van was spotted on MD 355 leaving downtown Bethesda last night. The van, one of 1000 expected to be on the roads nationwide by the end of this year, has a large video screen attached to a rear door. When the driver of the van brakes or activates a turn signal, the screen displays a message to that regard. At other times, the screen can be configured to display public safety bulletins, Amber Alerts, or - you guessed it - advertisements.

The screens and vehicle system interface were developed by Road Runner Media. German industrial giant Siemens has contracted with Road Runner to have the screens installed on the vans of Siemens technicians across the country.

Oh great. More distractions on the roadways. Hopefully those screens are well protected from vandalism.
