Purple Line Bethesda shaft work to resume, utility locations to be confirmed in Chevy Chase

A new construction contractor is in place for the beleaguered Purple Line light rail project, and major work is expected to resume in August. But contractors will be making preparations sooner, including here in Bethesda and Chevy Chase. On June 27, contractors will begin reestablishing the work zone parameters on the Bethesda shaft site on Elm Street.

Also on June 27, a crew will begin test pitting to confirm utility locations underneath and along Jones Mill Road, in the vicinity of Jones Bridge Road. This will require lane closures at times, and take place between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM for about three days. Watch for flagmen directing traffic.

The next day, June 28, test pitting will be conducted on Chevy Chase Lake Drive between Chevy Chase Lake Terrace and Hamlet Place. Parking may be restricted during that work, which will take place between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, weather permitting. Test pitting involves small excavations to verify the locations of underground utilities.
