Shouk opens in Bethesda (Photos)

Shouk
has opened at 5436 Westbard Avenue in the Westwood Shopping Center in Bethesda. The plant-based street food restaurant takes over the China Cafe space. Operating hours will be 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily, and it is primarily functioning as a carry-out, although there was a very small amount of outdoor seating out front yesterday. Remember that Ridgefield Road is closed at River Road, so you have to take a detour down Little Falls Parkway to Massachusetts Avenue to Westbard Avenue if you are coming from downtown Bethesda, or other points outside of the Westbard area.

For fans of the Westwood Shopping Center, I have to point out again an interesting fact that I mentioned in my first report on Shouk: This gives the venerable retail center bragging rights for hosting two (two!!) restaurants that were featured on the Food Network's The Best Thing I Ever Ate. Shouk's Shouk Burger was chosen by celebrity chef Carla Hall, and Mo Rocca cited the Gibson Girl sundae from the Westbard location of Farrell's, whose space is now home to Anglo Dutch Pools & Toys.

Longtime patrons will also remember the Shouk space originally was a Baskin-Robbins ice cream store in the 1980s. When this strip mall structure is demolished in the current redevelopment, Shouk will move into a larger, permanent space in the new Westbard Square development on the property. But they have to build it first.

BB did not credit you for your breaking news. How dare they.

10:25: I noticed that. Dan Schere has been good about giving credit in the past; a directive from the top to stop mentioning me, perhaps? Sad to see them go in that direction, if so. The danger for Bethesda Beat is that the result is plagiarism, a very serious matter.

I stopped reading and commenting on BB because they did not enforce their comment policy in my case by letting other commenters openly insult me for my conservative beliefs.
